Where did the ABU name came from ? Initially existed a factory ,the AB.Urfabriken that produced taximeters and telephone timers In swedish the word AB means " Corporation " and Urfabriken means " watch factory " World war II witnessed a drastic decline in the market for telephone timers and taximeters The Company decided to focus on the manufactured of fishing reels Early models of reels was RECORD 500 then 600 and 700 made by " record reel company of switzerland " MODEL RECORD 600 was the second half-bail model later of the 500 produced by ABU While models 222 - 225 - 888 - 999 - 1000 were made by zangi in Italy , all these models have raised letter on sideplate First model of 222 have green color and external bail trip to close bail Second version with internal bail trip ( green paint ) Third version was produced in mate black ( gray ) not painted Another 222 very rare version was painted in black In 1952 the AB Urfabriken company was nenamed ABU undoubtedly because of the confusion caused by the name RECORD In 1955 ABU introduced first version of model 444 medium size with full - bail arm always marked in raised lettering and with serial number on the foot By now , until 1982 these numbers indicated the age of the reel…… first two number are year of production Later version of 444 in 1959 was made for US market only Models 333 ( 1967 ) was an economical version of model 444 with black plastic drag knob In 1965 ABU introduced first series of spinning reels named CARDINAL Some years later ABU and ZEBCO ( ASmerican Company ) arrived to a contractual agreement that allowed the ABU cardinal series to be marketed in the USA under the ZEBCO name ZEBCO begin marketing of cardinals reels in 1968 This business venture would last into the early 1980s and worked out quite well for both , ZEBCO and ABU because the early cardinal series was one of the finest ever manufactured After many years and more than 130 models of fishing reels , from 1950 abu become abu garcia and begin the production of reels in japan A special series of reels was produced in sweden during the normal production were in japan These special reels are C3 C4 C4x , have the same caracteristics of weight retrieve , measurement and internal mechanics,than black japanese models but these models have green body and cream color of rotor cup ( like abu 44 and zebco 4 ) and in 1990s only was produced model abu cardinal 33 CDL in only 800 pcs with all metallic external parts plated 24 K gold in wodden box IF YOU HAVE HAD INTEREST READING THIS SHORT HISTORY TAKE A LOOK ON MY COLLECTION OF ABU REELS THANKS
